Job Description

**Important notice**

In line with our redeployment policy, we’ll prioritise applications from employees who are under formal notice of redundancy.

As the public face of our properties, you’ll provide a warm, friendly welcome, give information about the property, answer questions and make sure everyone has an enjoyable and memorable visit.
Salary: £12.75 an hour
Duration: Fixed term contract until 31 October 2026. This is a fixed term contract due to end when the postholder returns to the role. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.
Hours: 624 hours across the contract. This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in equal instalments over the year. You'll work more during our busier periods and less during quieter times.
Shift times will typically be a combination of 9:00–15:30 or 10:00–14:00 during the winter, and 9:00–16:30 or 10:00–15:00 in the summer. The working pattern includes a mix of weekday and weekend shifts to support the needs of the site.
You'll also be required to work over the Christmas period as this is one of our busier times of year.
For this role, you’ll need to complete our online assessment instead of using a C.V. or online application form. This will help us understand more about your strengths and give you more information on the role.

Reporting to the Welcome Manager, you’ll be part of a friendly team of eight who take pride in welcoming every visitor with warmth and enthusiasm. Each day brings the opportunity to share your knowledge and help others discover the fascinating history and stories of our site.
We’re a team that looks out for one another and takes pride in getting on with the job, whatever the day brings. If you enjoy learning, talking to people, and providing excellent service in a supportive and down-to-earth team, you’ll feel right at home here.
Training and support will be provided, along with opportunities to develop new skills and deepen your knowledge, whether about the site’s history, visitor experience, or the wider work we do.

Our work revolves around creating great experiences—answering questions, assisting with requests, and making sure every visitor has the information they need to enjoy their day. You’ll help us keep track of who our visitors are so we can continue to improve the service and support we offer.
The role includes a mix of practical and customer-facing responsibilities, such as opening and locking the Welcome Building, driving the access buggy to help visitors move around the site, and using the till to process admissions. You’ll also play an important part in promoting membership and supporting our fundraising efforts, helping visitors feel inspired to get more involved or to donate.
A certain level of physical fitness is required, as the role involves being on your feet for much of the day, carrying out light physical tasks, and working in all weathers.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

  • a team player, but also can work on your own initiative
  • well organised and adaptable
